Interpreting the author's symbolism

I have loved reading all your posts! Your thoughts about Out of My Mind have been solid, and I hope you are continuing to enjoy the book. Your assignment for this week includes two parts.

1. How is Melody like Ollie?
(If you don't know who Ollie is, read Chapter 8.)

2. We all know what happened to Ollie. Do you think this is the author's way of foreshadowing? Why or why not?

  1. Melody is like Ollie because she cant say anything or express herself just like Ollie.

No, because that was just an incident that the parents couldn't understand and is just an event in the book.

Melody and Ollie are both alike she is limited to movement and can barely make conversation. They both want to to get out of their confined space, Melodies is her mind, Ollie's was his fish bowl.

I don't think this was foreshadowing because when Ollie left his confined space he died. I think Melody will get out of her space but I don't think she will pass away.

    1. Melody and Ollie both cannot express themselves very well, and they keep everything bottled up inside. They both want to have the freedom to explore the world around them without the confinement they both struggle with.
    2. I believe that the author is foreshadowing events to come in the book. My theory is that Melody won't die, but when she tries to go out of her mind, something bad will happen

1.) I think Melody & Ollie are alike because, both are trapped out & cant get out! They're just stuck in the same place day after day, without getting out!
2.) I think it is a way of foreshadowing, because Ollie finally got out, but it didn't end well for him! But I think that if Melody gets out of her mind, then it will end well for her. (:

    1. Melody and Ollie are both confined to a certain place, they can't talk, can't play, and they can't tell people how they feel.
    2. I think the author is foreshadowing about the upcoming events that are gonna happen.

First Melody and Oliie both can't talk or express what they want to say. They are confined in their minds and have to do the same things over and over.
Second I think the author is foreshadowing what will happen if Melody does manage to free herself. She will break away from her routine and things might happen.

    1. Melody and Ollie are alike because they both cant express themselves. They both cant talk or do many things.
    2. I don't think this is foreshadowing because I think it was just an event that happened. I don't think that is going to happen to Melody.

    1. Melody and Olllie are both alike because they can't talk and they both express themselves in different ways.
    2. I do think this is a way of foreshadowing because I think Melody will get out of her mind, but won't die. (or at least I hope)

  10. 1.Melody is like Ollie because people think of her as just a kid thats handicapped but she's more than that, like people think Ollie is just a fish.

    2. i DO THINK THIS IS THE AUTHOR'S WAY OF FRESHADOWING BECAUSE I THINK BEFORE THE END OF THIS BOOK MELODY WILL BE KNOWN FOR SOMEONE WHO IS MORE THAN JUST A HANDICAPPPED KID.

  11. 1.Melody is like Oliie because Melody cant really move around or go anywhere like Ollie because he is a fish and he cant go anywhere either but he can move. (just in a cirlce at least)
2.I think that this is a foreshawdowing because just like ollie melody could make a leap (well i mean walk or move ) and then other people will recognize who she really is .JANIQUAT.4TH PERIOD

1.Melody and Ollie are alike because they both have to deal with their challenges in their lifetime.
2.The author is using foreshadowing because something big may happen later on in the book

  13. 1. Meledy is like Ollie because they both have obstables. Ollie cant go anywhere because he is a fish and Melody cant because she has a disablity. She cant move so its like her great personality is trapped inside a diabled body.
    2. I think that this is foreshadowing because something really big and important might happen later on in the book.

    1. Melody is like Ollie because they both seem to want something more than the life they had and what they were able to do.
    2. I think that it is foreshadowing because Ollie tried to do something more for himself, and it's possible that Melody will do that too. She already said that she felt like Ollie sometimes, so maybe she'll try to get out too.
